Who We Are
YALA UNITED was founded in 2025 by a group of visionary Yala sons and daughters who recognised the urgent need for a unified platform — one that would bring together every Yala-speaking person at home and across the globe under one shared vision.
Born out of a deep love for our land, our language, and our people, YALA UNITED was established to advance and transform our communities through collective effort, unity, and purposeful action. From the salt ponds of Okpoma to the yam festivals of Yahe, our traditions are living treasures that bind us as one people.
YALA UNITED exists to protect that heritage while creating real opportunities for growth, development, and empowerment — for Yala sons and daughters in Cross River State, across Nigeria, and in the global diaspora. Whether in Lagos, London, Toronto, or Dubai, this platform is your bridge back home.
This movement is strictly non-political and non-partisan — a people-driven force built on love for our land and an unbreakable commitment to the common good. Our journey has just begun.
Our Journey
YALA UNITED was established in Okpoma by a group of passionate Yala sons and daughters committed to building a non-partisan, community-driven movement to unite all Yala-speaking peoples at home and in the diaspora.
The YALA UNITED digital platform went live — creating a shared online home for Yala people from all five host communities and the global diaspora to connect, discuss, and collaborate.
A landmark initiative celebrating the Yala language, traditions, and heritage — drawing participation from members across Okpoma, Yahe, Echumofana, Gabu, and Okuku communities.
YALA UNITED reached out to Yala sons and daughters in the UK, USA, Canada, Germany, Australia, and UAE — welcoming the diaspora as equal partners in the development of Yalaland.
The founding Executive Committee (EXCO) was formally constituted, with elected leadership positions to guide the strategic direction, administration, and community activities of YALA UNITED.
Our first real gathering — sons and daughters of Yala came together for a day of food, fellowship, and fun that showed what YALA UNITED could become.
Yala-speaking communities — at home and across the diaspora — paused on August 30th to honour the new yam harvest with dance, food, and tradition, worldwide.
Our biggest gathering yet — December 28th, 2026 at Christ The King Primary School Field, Okpoma. Traditional rulers, sons and daughters from Nigeria and the diaspora, and the historic Yala Peace Ambassadors Decoration. History is about to be made.

What We Are Doing
Twelve clear, purposeful objectives guide every action, initiative, and conversation within the YALA UNITED community.
Foster brotherhood, cooperation, mutual respect, and solidarity among all Yala-speaking communities in Yala Local Government Area.
Identify, support, and champion projects improving quality of life through infrastructure, education, healthcare, and social development.
Protect, preserve, and promote the Yala language, customs, traditions, cultural heritage, and values for future generations.
Encourage peaceful coexistence, dialogue, reconciliation, and conflict prevention among communities and stakeholders across Yalaland.
Support youth development through education, mentorship, leadership training, skills acquisition, entrepreneurship, and employment opportunities.
Encourage and support the active involvement of women in community development, leadership, and social advancement.
Promote agriculture, trade, investment, tourism, innovation, and other economic activities improving the livelihoods of Yala people.
Constructively engage government institutions, development partners, and stakeholders on issues affecting the welfare of Yala-speaking communities.
Encourage voluntary contributions, partnerships, and collective efforts towards execution of projects that benefit Yala communities.
Encourage academic excellence, scholarships, literacy programs, and educational opportunities for Yala children and youths.
Identify and honor individuals who have distinguished themselves through service, leadership, professional achievements, and contributions to Yala development.
Remain a non-partisan platform welcoming members of all political, religious, and social backgrounds — dedicated only to unity and development.

Our Leaders
The founding leadership of YALA UNITED, elected by the general assembly, guides the strategic direction and vision of the movement.
Founding member and community visionary. A devoted development advocate and proud son of Yalaland committed to building a united and prosperous community for all.
Women's leader and entrepreneur. Champions gender empowerment, youth education, and economic development across all five Yala host communities.
Legal practitioner and diaspora liaison. Coordinates all administrative functions, correspondence, and international community outreach for the movement.
Public Relations Officer managing all communications, media relationships, and external partnerships — ensuring YALA UNITED's voice reaches every corner of the world.
Finance professional overseeing community funds, financial transparency, and project budgeting with absolute accountability to every member of YALA UNITED.
Coordinates social welfare programmes, humanitarian support, and member assistance across Okpoma, Yahe, Echumofana, Gabu, and Okuku communities.
Our Roots
The Yala people are known for a rich tradition of agriculture, art, music, and community life. Our culture is the thread that binds us across generations and geographies — from Cross River State to the global diaspora.
Traditional rhythms and ceremonial dances are central to our festivals, celebrations, and communal identity — expressions of the joy and pride that define the Yala spirit.
Yala delicacies — freshly harvested yam, native soups, and local spices — tell the story of our fertile land and the warmth of Yala hospitality.
Spoken by over 210,000 people, the Yala language carries our identity, history, and wisdom. Its preservation is central to who we are as one united people.
The Yam Festival and New Yam celebrations of Yahe and other communities are landmark events uniting all Yala-speaking peoples in gratitude, joy, and shared heritage.
Traditional weaving, pottery, and craftsmanship remain cherished art forms — beautiful expressions of Yala creativity passed from generation to generation.

Where We Are
Okpoma — the administrative headquarters of Yala LGA and the undisputed capital of the Yala people, located in eastern Cross River State, Nigeria.
Yala LGA covers 1,739 km² — bounded by Benue State to the north, Ogoja LGA to the east, and Ebonyi State to the west.
Over 210,843 people (2006 census) — making Yala the second most populated LGA in Cross River State.
Known for salt ponds, yam festivals, rice production, and a rich living cultural heritage celebrated across generations.
